Officer Hurt in Collision

An officer in Farmington was injured after a collision while trying to pull over a motorcycle. The officer collided with an SUV that was turning into the street.

FARMINGTON — A Centerville police sergeant was injured when his vehicle collided with a Jeep Cherokee while pulling over a motorcycle in Farmington.

Farmington Police Chief Wayne Hansen said the Centerville officer was heading west on Park Lane at 12:07 p.m. Tuesday when he tried to pull over a motorcycle. He had entered the intersection at Park Lane, when a 74-year-old woman in the Jeep was making a left turn onto Interstate 15. The officer broadsided the Jeep.

Hansen said he does not know if the sergeant had the flashing lights on his car. Also, the driver of the motorcycle was not at the accident scene when Farmington police and emergency crews arrived.

The woman, who complained of pains in her left side, and the Centerville police officer were transported to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

Collapsed Wall Kills Construction Worker

In Queens, a construction worker was killed after a wall collapsed. Three others were injured in the accident.

Queens, NY—A construction accident at a Queens construction site killed one worker and injured three others, when a wall collapsed on Monday morning, January 10, 2011. The fatal construction accident occurred near Grand Ave. in Elmhurst around 9:30 a.m., as reported by the NY Daily News.

Gerardo Escalona, a worker at the construction site, said the workers were standing atop of scaffolding while they were stacking cinder blocks to construct a 20-foot high wall. As the workers were pouring cement to fill the wall, it gave way, collapsing onto the workers.

Responding emergency crews rushed one worker, identified as Huberto Sanchez, 27, of Corona, by ambulance to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. Sanchez reportedly went into cardiac arrest during the collapse.

Three others were also rushed to Elmhurst where they are in stable condition.

Boy in New Mexico Boards Bus After Being Hit

A boy in New Mexico was hit by a school bus which he then boarded after. The boy suffered from leg and rib injuries.

Rio Rancho, NM– A Rio Rancho boy was hit by a school bus and then boarded it with leg and rib injuries on Wednesday afternoon, January 5, 2011. The automobile accident occurred at around 1:05 p.m. as the bus from Maggie Cordova Elementary School was traveling on Wexford Road near Tarpon Avenue, as reported by KRQE.

Rio Rancho Police Department reported that a 9-year-old boy ran in front of the school and was hit, but he still boarded the bus as it made a few more stops before emergency crews arrived.

Responding emergency crews rushed the boy via ambulance to University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment of rib and leg injuries.

Mother Furious With Las Vegas Police

The mother of a 13-year-old girl who was hit by a car is furious at the Las Vegas Police. The police ticketed the girl for jaywalking even though she is currently in a coma.

Las Vegas, NV—One mother is furious with Las Vegas police after they ticketed her 13-year-old daughter as she was being rushed in for an operation. Las Vegas police ticketed the teen for jaywalking after she crossed a street and was hit by an oncoming car, as reported by My Fox Boston.

Kellie Obong, the mother of 13-year-old Takara Davis, stated her daughter was trying to keep up with friends as they crossed the street. Takara was struck by an oncoming car.

“She hit the windshield, flipped three times in the air and from the point of impact to where her body was … Metro [police] told me she was 125 feet [away],” Obong recalled.

Wrong-way Crash Kills Student

A 21-year-old woman was killed on her birthday in a head-on collision. The woman was not wearing her seatbelt when the accident occurred.

Orlando, FL—An Orlando woman was killed in a wrong way crash on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, her 21st birthday. The fatal accident occurred on Vineland Road, in close proximity to the Florida Turnpike overpass, according to information provided by Click Orlando.

Reports indicated a University of Central Florida student, Chelsea Brooke Torres was operating a 2001 Volkswagen eastbound in the westbound lanes of Vineland Road around 3:15 a.m. As Torres drove her vehicle across the Turnpike, it slammed into the front of another car, driven by Elvis Felix, 23.

While Felix was apparently wearing his seatbelt at the time of the head-on collision, Torres was not. It was not clear if the UCF student was rushed to a hospital after the wreck, or if her traumatic injuries proved fatal at the scene.

Snow Causing Problems for Commuters

In Brockton, commuters are facing scary conditions as they try to drive to and from work in the snowy conditions. The number of accidents that have occurred has overwhelmed the police department.

BROCKTON —

Police and firefighters across the region are struggling to respond to dozens of accidents that began about 2 p.m. Monday, as wind-whipped snow started blanketing local roads and making for a nightmarish afternoon commute.

“Everything that has wheels is out on the road right now,” David Lynch, owner of Lynch’s towing in Brockton, said about 4:10 p.m. “We’re trying to clear the ramps just to get people off the highway.”

Brockton police Lt. Robert Sergio said about 3 p.m. Monday that the department was “overwhelmed with  car accidents, and we’re using all available resources to respond to them.”

Hornets’ Player Loses Sister and Cousin in Crash

The New Orleans Hornets basketball player Willie Green lost both his sister and cousin in a car accident on Monday. They were declared dead after hitting a tree on the side of the road.

The sister of New Orleans Hornets basketball player Willie Green and her cousin were killed in a car accident early Monday morning after family members attended Green’s game against the Pistons in his native Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Tamara Lynette Green, 30, and her cousin, Gary Benjamin Green, 27, were declared dead at the scene after their vehicle reportedly veered off I-75 and hit a tree just before 1:00am local time.

“They went off the roadway at a high rate of speed, went airborne and hit the tree with the roof of the car,” Troy Police Lt. Robert Redmond said. “It wasn’t the road conditions; the road was fine. It was the speed. Where there’s the least amount of protection is the roof of the car.”

Four Students Injured in Bus Crash

A bus crash that occurred between a bus and a pickup truck injured four students. The driver of the pickup truck failed to stop in the snowy conditions, hitting the school bus from the side.

Huron County, MI—A Sebewaing Township collision between a pickup truck and a school bus serving Unionville-Sebewaing Area (USA) Schools was involved in a collision that injured four students. The accident occurred along M-25 (Unionville Road) around 9:29 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, according to information provided by the Huron Daily Tribune.

Reports indicated 43-year-old Toni Lynn Nitz was behind the wheel of her 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck and was traveling westbound on Bach Road, when the snowy roadway conditions prevented her from being able to bring her vehicle to a stop at M-25.

Dog Killed After Attacking Runner

A large dog that attacked a runner in Port St. Lucie was killed during the attack. The runner and his son were attacked, and the victim killed the dog while trying to restrain it.

Port St. Lucie, FL—A jogger was hospitalized after a large dog attacked him on Southwest Masilunas Street in Port St. Lucie Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010. The victim, who was with his 7-year-old son at the time, apparently killed the black Lab-chow mix when he held it by the neck as a means of restraining it, as reported by CBS Channel 12 News.

John A. Harris, a 32-year-old Port St. Lucie man, was jogging behind his son, Jackson, who was riding his bike, when they neared a residence in the 3600 block of SW Masilunas Street. The pair noticed a big dog gazing at them, prompting Harris to tell his son to get behind him.

The dog then dashed towards them as they tried to continue past the home. The Lab-chow mix leapt on Harris, leaving him with severe injuries.

Man Gets Probation for Bicycle Hit and Run

A man in Denver has been sentenced to probation for a hit and run accident that involved a bicyclist. The bicyclist was seriously injured in the accident.

EAGLE. Colo. — A Denver man has been sentenced to probation and community service for a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a New York cyclist near Vail.

Martin Erzinger, 52, who has a second home in the Vail area, was also sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail, but Eagle County District Judge Frederick Gannett suspended the jail time.

Erzinger will lose his driver’s license for year. Denver’s KMGH-TV reported that the sentencing followed approval of a plea deal criticized as being too lenient.

Erzinger was charged with misdemeanors in the accident that injured Dr. Steven Milo of New York City in July. The 33-year-old Milo, still recovering from several injuries, asked the judge to reject the plea deal.
